Behm Canal
The Misty Fjords: Walker Cove and Rudyerd Bay accessed via Behm Canal.

Cruise through magnificent 2.2 million acre Misty Fjords National Monument, characterized by fjords with cliffs thousands of feet high. Here waterfalls plunge from the heights into the emerald waters. Harbor seals and Dall porpoises are common in the monument. An occasional humpback or killer whale pod can be encountered. You will likely see black and brown bear on the beach and possibly mountain goats on the cliff sides.

The area is rich in history. Captain George Vancouver traveled through this area in his historic 1793 voyage of discovery. Evidence of Indian past presence exists in the form of ancient village sites, cave burials, stone fish traps and pictographs. The area is truly a land of fire and ice. Dramatic glacial scaring in the cliff sides provide testimony to the power and movement of the glaciers that shaped the fjords. See famous Eddystone Rock, a volcanic plug towering from the depths of Behm Canal. The Monument is know for its hot springs and a unique soda springs near New Eddystone Rock. We will hike to Punchbowl Lake up a switchback trail adjacent to a cascading waterfall. The view at the lake is of a dramatic cirque.

Kayaking here is an awesome experience. The last day takes us to southern reaches of monument to a very different environment, the scattered islets of Foggy Bay and a near-by abandoned Tlingit village site. Here we are adjacent to the open waters of Dixon Entrance with an ocean swell and a hint of ocean kelp scent in the air. Kayakers can explore the island’s protected white sandy beaches and nearby saltwater lake or “salt chuck.” Your host is intimately familiar with the monument. He spent time here as a field biologist and commercial fisherman.
